Yee Peng / Loy Krathong Festivals
These 2 festivals are held all over Thailand, but are most spectacular around Chiang Mai. Normally held on the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai Traditional calendar, in 2017 they will be held on the 2nd - 4th November
The Loy Krathong Festival is where small, handmade boats are floated on rivers, canals and various other waterways to thank the goddess of water for giving life to the fields and to float “Loy“ away sins and bad
luck and to carry forward any new wishes that have been made. The boats/baskets “Krathongs” can be either simple in design or very ornate and are traditionally made with banana leaves, flowers and other foliage along with candles and incense sticks.
The Yee Peng Festival is where lanterns are released into the night sky as an act of releaseing all ills and misfortunes of the previous year and also that if you make a wish as you release the lantern, then your wish will come true. When done en masse as is the case in various places around Chiang Mai it is a spectacular sight.
